English as a Second Language > Tutoring > Private Tutors for Hire
The English as a Second Language Program maintains a list of private tutors in the area who are willing to work one on one with nonnative speakers of English for an hourly fee.
This information is provided for the convenience of those looking for additional assistance; not all tutors listed are affiliated with Northwestern's ESL program. The Program cannot make specific recommendations about those tutors not officially affilated with its program.
Fees vary, but the range for one-on-one services is generally $20-$40 per hour. If you are interested in setting up an appointment, please contact one of the tutors listed below directly. Tutors may be contacted either by telephone or e-mail, see specific listings for details.

Jen Alexander

Melissa Baese
Melissa Baese has extensive ESL teaching experience, tutoring both children and adults in various aspects of spoken and written English communication. She is currently working on her PhD in Linguistics at Northwestern.

Rachel Baker
Rachel Baker has a wide range of ESL experience, having taught high school English in France and having taught and tutored graduate students in the

Stephanie Fosnight
Stephanie Fosnight graduated in 2002 with a master's degree from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University, and has since become a journalist writing at the local, regional, and national level. She has worked as a grammar and reading teacher at a private school, and as a magazine editor. Her expertise lies in editing theses and dissertations, as well as helping students craft excellent cover letters and application essays. Most jobs take between 1 and 3 hours.

Dalia Hoffman
Dalia specializes in adult ESL instruction, conversational English, grammar, writing (essays, resumes, and cover letters), as well as editing. She is bilingual in English and Hebrew, and she is fluent in Spanish. Dalia holds a M.A. and a B.A. in English, and she is pursuing teacher certification in secondary English and ESL.

Meredith Larson
Meredith has taught college composition and developmental writing, tutored prescriptive English grammar, and worked as an ESL tutor and instructor. Her primary strengths are in conversational English and in academic writing and presenting. She is currently working on her PhD in linguistics with a focus on syntax and South Asian languages.
