Welcome to the International Summer Institute!

ISI is an intense immersion program that combines classes and tutoring in spoken English with exciting social events and helpful practical information about living and working in an American university setting. ISI students form a small, friendly community and help each other with adjustment to life in a new country. The tutors and instructors are experienced teachers of English as a Foreign Language from the Department of Linguistics and the community at large. Volunteers from the university and the surrounding community join the program during social outings and sessions on academic life and practical issues.
The three core areas of ISI are instruction, social events and integration issues.
Instruction: daily classes in spoken English, plus one-on-one tutoring, student workshops, and more.
Social Events: social activities outside the classroom that give students a chance to practice their new skills, while getting to know Evanston and Chicago.
Integration Issues: information sessions on practical issues such as finding an apartment, setting up a bank account, and transportation; as well as a special conference on academic issues, such as finding a mentor, teaching, and academic honesty.
